And today - we hop over to Brooklyn with Karl to find dog-friendly venues in the outer boroughs!!
I have been yammering about going to Dekalb Market for quite some time now. Expecting a Smorgasburg experience, I excitedly dragged my butt (and Karl's butt) out to Brooklyn for some food vendor fun under the sun!
Of course with any FOODIE DOG FILES post, a picture of Karl in dog-friendly places!! Can you spy him in the arms of the man wearing baby blue???
To be honest, I was not very impressed with the offerings at Dekalb Market. The little knick knack shops were filled with mostly uninteresting, cheap items. And the food offering was surprisingly slim! My pal ordered some pulled pork buns and complained that they were served cold. I ended up only being intrigued by the Nile Valley Eco-Juice & Salad Bar.
I ordered the Nile Coco Mango - a mixture of mango, banana, pineapple, mixed nuts/seeds, and almond milk. Not bad, but not cheap! $7.50 for a 12oz cup...eesh!
After our disappointing romp through Dekalb Market, we made our way over to Brooklyn Heights and satiated our hunger at Siggy's Good Food (also a dog-friendly restaurant with outdoor seating!!). I love organic restaurants that use fresh, local ingredients! And I was happy to discover that a new location would be opening up soon in Nolita!
We started with the Hummus Plate - homemade hummus with parsley and garlic, topped with paprika and EVOO. For someone that does not like parsley, I still thought the hummus was quite tasty!
We also shared the Grilled Baby Artichokes Plate - marinated and grilled artichokes served with roasted red peppers, kalamata olives, baby greens, and topped with parmesan reggiano cheese. We all agreed the artichokes were tasty - well flavored with nice textures.
I wanted to do a light dinner - so the Greek Style Quinoa & Avocado salad was absolutely perfect. Quinoa, cucumbers, kalamata olives, scallions, parsley, organic baby greens, feta cheese, cracked fresh peppercorn, and a lemon olive oil dressing. I added Tofu Fingers as a protein, and this made for an absolutely delicious salad! So many of my favorite things on one plate!
We were all pleasantly surprised by Siggy's Good Food and I cannot wait to revisit the new location once it opens in Manhattan!
