The middle to end of April is the absolute best time to go see the tulips in bloom at Netherland's Keukenhof Gardens, the world's largest tulip garden. You will not only be able to see tulips but also the other 7 million flowers planted in the 70-acre garden - including daffodils, hyacinths, and even greenhouses filled with orchids and azaleas. But the real stunner is viewing the tulip fields from up above!!

Simply amazing, bright, beautiful strips of color. Although it may not necessarily qualify as natural beauty (these tulips were planted in these particular clusters for a reason), the final product of these fields were certainly unintentional pieces of art.
The innocent artistry of these fields reminds me of the quilts of Gee's Bend - these women from Alabama have been making quilts throughout the 20th century as a domestic responsibility. I have a feeling they didn't even realize that they were actually creating abstract art!!!!
Raise your hand if you think Mark Rothko's signature "multiform" style was actually both inspired by and realistic depictions of Holland's tulip fields??I don't really buy into the concept of abstraction (even though I am a fan of most modern art, and may later retract this statement). I mostly think it's just like looking at the world through a fuzzy pair of contact lenses. So why not take a trip to Amsterdam, get inspired by the tulips fields, and then make some of your own abstract art (after a trip to one of those Amsterdam "coffeeshops").
