Remember those days when eating at restaurants and getting a cone of icecream was reserved for special occasions?? Like birthdays? And straight-A's on your report card? I'm wondering when this changed...and how I have become the glutton that I am today.
A week in review:
Monday aka Cinco de Mayo: Drank MANY ginger, hibiscus, and blood orange margaritas and enjoyed a scrumptious stuffed pepper at La Palapa.
Tuesday: Stayed in...but spent like $50 buying icecream at the grocery store. PEOPLE. WTF is up with Edy's!?!?! I don't know if you've noticed or not but their 1.75 quart container has now dwarfed into a 1.5 qt container!!!! Yet they are charging the SAME PRICE as their competitors that are offering icecream in 1.75 quart containers. HEINOUS. But of course, that didn't stop me from purchasing like 3 cartons of it. While we are on the subject of icecream, has anyone else noticed/tried the new delicious blends of frozen yogurts that Haagen Dazs has to offer? I love the frozen yogurt + honey + granola blend. Pre-added crunch. Genius!!!
Wednesday: Ate sushi and drank Sapporo at Citrus.
Thursday: Spent like $7 on a soft-serve icecream cone at Ben & Jerry's only to have the cone COLLAPSE on me in the middle of the street. All the soft-serve started oozing out all over my hands and I looked like some addict with rabies trying to shovel melting soft-serve into my mouth in the middle of the street. Way to go, Ben & Jerry's...how could you have not perfected a cone that is thick enough to support soft-serve!??! What kind of industry king are you!?!?
Friday: It was a rainy day...instead of going out, we opted to stay in and have a relaxing dinner and drink some good wine at Bar Stuzzichini, which was voted 2008 "Best Small Plates" in New York Magazine. And I did, indeed, enjoy some great small plates!! Ricotte e Miele (Saffron Honey) Crostini, Involtini (Stuffed Eggplant), Arancini (Rice Balls - totally yummy balls of gooey rice that are wrapped with buffalo mozzarella and then FRIED), Baccala Fritto (Fried Salt Cod), Polpo (Grilled Octopus), and Spigola alla Cartoccio (Striped Bass roasted in parchment). YUMMLICIOUS. I am kind of obsessed with crostinis...and drizzling honey on top of cheese. I would make them myself..but I'm afraid that I wouldn't be able to control myself...and rather than eating 1 or 2 crostinis...I would accidentally eat 53. And WHAT IS UP with COD and the people who like it. I just don't get it. I ordered the Baccala Fritto because it was supposed to be a good dish at this restaurant...knowing that I don't like cod. And this confirmed it...ONCE AGAIN. I mean...not that it tastes bad, I just don't understand why people would spend money eating cod at a restaurant...being that it is the fish that they use in FISH STICKS. Not that fish sticks aren't edible/delicious. They just don't taste good when they cost $24/stick. OH! And I didn't even MENTION the DESSERT yet. Oh lord. We had a Torta Caprese (Chocolate Hazelnut Cake).
-excerpt from conversation with waiter-
Jean: Does the Torta Caprese come with icecream?
Waiter: Uhm, yes, a little bit.
Jean: Like...how much.
Waiter: Like...two little bites.
Jean: Uhm...can you make it more than two bites?
Waiter: Like how many bites?
Jean: Like a lot of bites.
OH LORDY, was that delicious. And the waiter definitely hooked us up with a large scoop of vanilla gelato. Afterwards, we went to a Gottino, a small wine bar in Greenwich Village...but I don't remember much of it because I pretty much fell asleep at the table. Wine overdose.
Saturday: After a day of being cultured at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I sat down to dinner at Ocean Grill. It was a random choice. We just wanted to sit outside. And Ocean Grill offered outdoor seating. So it worked out well. The service sucked...but the food was quite delicious..and they even gave complimentary coffeecake muffins to take away at the end of our meal!! Score! I had the Tempura Shrimp and Spicy Yellow Tail Roll (with Asian pear and ponzu sauce) and the Creamy Wasabi Tuna Roll (with tempura crunch and avocado). GOD, what I would do to just get a pepper shaker filled with tempura crunchies and just sprinkle it on everything. Raw tuna just isn't the same without those crunchies.
Sunday: The strip of Japanese restaurants at St. Mark's Place are some of the best bargains that you can find in the city. Especially for Japanese food. My entire meal at Kenka was totally yummlicious and filling...and cost me about as much as I would have spent on like..half an appetizer anywhere else. I got a huge bowl of negitoro and rice for $5.5o (usually restaurants will charge $14+ for one little cone of this shiz)...and a pot of steamed egg for an additional $5.50. Speaking of free shiz that they give away at the end of the meal...the best part about eating at Kenka is the small cup of pink, crystallized sugar that they hand you along with your check. You then take this small cup of sugar outside and throw it into their COTTON CANDY MACHINE!!! And spin your own personalized cotton candy creation! Then of course, I couldn't stop myself from spending an additional $7 on a cup of Red Mango.
Typing all of this out has made me:
1. Hungry.
2. Realize that I spend the majority of my paycheck on icecream.
3. Realize that I eat out entirely too much and that I should be better utilizing my time by getting a hobby...or taking up a part time job at Red Mango.
4. Realize that I should somehow find a way to make money whilst/for eating out...
I also watched the movie Iron Man this evening. And it made me:
1. Wish that I was super, super smart.
2. Want to show this movie to my future children so that they will be inspired to be super, super smart...and make a lot of money thereafter. So that they can buy their mother lots and lots of icecream.

This is freaking hilarious, Jean.
And, this is what I hope for too, from my PAACH kids:
"So that they can buy their mother lots and lots of icecream."
